A true coming of age story, Lady Bird shows things in a more raw and realistic way. The styling and acting lifts it above other similar stories. However it has some of the same pitfalls as any story that has been told so many times. …

The Good Neighbor (2016)

IMDB: [NR]Β A pair of mischievous high school kids create the illusion of a haunting on an unsuspecting elderly neighbor while keeping his every reaction under surveillance. A series of coincidences leads to tragedy.

A down-tempo well done docu-style film brings us a new take in the vein of Rear Window. Two teens, Ethan and Sean, get wrapped up into a project studying humans but push the limits too far. This one went in a surprising direction and overall was much better than I expected. The documentary-style footage was done well composed, though the plot and writing stumbled in a few places. While slower moving it still kept me glued to the screen. Toss in some heavy emotions and we’ve got a winner. …

Colette (2018)

IMDB: [R] Colette is pushed by her husband to write novels under his name. Upon their success, she fights to make her talents known, challenging gender norms.

Set in the 1890s to early 1900s we see a story based on the true life of Colette, a French novelist. There’s dazzling costumes, rich emotions, quick and deep romances, and the perseverance of a prolific artist’s mind.Β  Β The setting is stunning and it’s a story begging to be told.Β  Much like real life, characters are complicated and none are purely virtuous or villainous.Β  …

The Clovehitch Killer (2018)

IMDB: [UR]Β A shocking revelation turns a teenage boy’s world upside down in this chilling look at the evil that can lurk below even the most wholesome surface. Tyler Burnside is a Boy Scout, a volunteer at his local church, and the dutiful son of an upstanding, community leader dad. Only one thing troubles the quiet Kentucky town he lives in: the unsolved murders-in which ten women were brutally tortured and killed by a psychopath known as Clovehitch-that rocked the community more than a decade ago.

Wow! What a fantastic movie that took me in directions I didn’t expect. From IFC Midnight is this gem of a murder-mystery crime drama of sorts with some amazing tension. I found myself literally biting my fingers (heh, I quit biting my nails years ago) and screeching curse words to cut the tension. I went into this one expecting to enjoy it but was pretty blown away by how it threw a wrench or two into the mix. When I rate something a 10 it means 1) It’s a favorite that I’ll watch over and over and am sure to recommend AND/OR 2) It added something new and interesting to a genre and surprised me. …

Jonathan (2018)

IMDB: [UR] This sci-fi-tinged drama follows two brothers living very separate lives – inside the same body. Content to live life in shifts with one another, their delicate balance is ruined when they become emotionally involved with the same woman.

The description above is one that actually tells the plot the way the trailer does. And while I’m all for avoiding spoilers, I don’t think I can talk about the concept of this film without at least getting this info.

Rating: [6] πŸ’šπŸ’šπŸ’šπŸ’šπŸ’šπŸ’šπŸ–€πŸ–€πŸ–€πŸ–€

This is a pretty good, slow sci-fi drama with some great acting. However I somewhat struggled to rate it. I flip flopped between a 6 and a 7 for various reasons. If you’re into a slower drama with some sci-fi touches similar to Black MirrorΒ then I think you’ll like this one. And I have to give it a kudos for some unique storytelling. However, I found myself almost re-editing or re-writing it as I watched it. Perhaps that’s because I watch… well… a lot of movies. I’m no expert but I know enough about stories to get a little bored when the endings are too obvious. Overall, I enjoyed it and there was some good emotion and character portrayal. …

Jack and the Cuckoo Clock Heart (2013)

IMDB:Β [PG]Β A 19th-century drama about a man whose heart was replaced with a clock when he was born. The situation dictates that he should avoid feeling strong emotions — love, most of all — but he just can’t keep his feelings under wraps.

I don’t feel it would be right to start a movie review blog without featuring one of the most beautiful and compelling stories I’ve watched. A stunning blend of music, drama, love, and tragedy. …
