Mind Bending

Shadow (2018)

IMDB: [NR] With SHADOW, director Zhang Yimou (HERO, HOUSE OF FLYING DAGGERS) once again pushes the boundaries of wuxia action to create a film like no other, masterfully painting a canvas of inky blacks and greys punctuated with bursts of color from the blood of the defeated. In a kingdom ruled by a young and unpredictable king, the military commander has a secret weapon: a “shadow”, a look-alike who can fool both his enemies and the King himself. Now he must use this weapon in an intricate plan that will lead his people to victory in a war that the King does not want.

Prepare yourself for one of the most jaw dropping, visually stunning films limited to mixed black and white with splashes of red. Seriously, you could fill a museum with still shots from this film. And the purposeful fight scenes take full advantage of movement in all its beauty.  …

Mandy (2018)

IMDB: [NR] The enchanted lives of a couple in a secluded forest are brutally shattered by a nightmarish hippie cult and their demon-biker henchmen, propelling a man into a spiraling, surreal rampage of vengeance.

If you want a fun, sunny time this ain’t it. Turn back now. If you’re up for feeling like you’re on drugs and drown in some gore, buckle up and let’s go. There’s not a great way to really describe this story. The summary above does a good job but it can’t capture the feeling and slow pacing. The lights, colors, and score make this one part King Crimson music video-the opening track, one part fantasy world, one part acid trip, and one part bloody, culty revenge flick. It’s Not Rated so you’re in for heaps of gore and some extra nudity versus an R-rated movie. (Though personally I feel nudity/sex is often rated much more harshly than it should be.) …
