Shadow (2018)

IMDB: [NR]Β With SHADOW, director Zhang Yimou (HERO, HOUSE OF FLYING DAGGERS) once again pushes the boundaries of wuxia action to create a film like no other, masterfully painting a canvas of inky blacks and greys punctuated with bursts of color from the blood of the defeated. In a kingdom ruled by a young and unpredictable king, the military commander has a secret weapon: a “shadow”, a look-alike who can fool both his enemies and the King himself. Now he must use this weapon in an intricate plan that will lead his people to victory in a war that the King does not want.

Prepare yourself for one of the most jaw dropping, visually stunning films limited to mixed black and white with splashes of red. Seriously, you could fill a museum with still shots from this film. And the purposeful fight scenes take full advantage of movement in all its beauty.Β  …

What an unexpected JOY! Assuming you know anything about me or have seen the movies I watch, I’ve got a big soft spot for creature features and scifi. I enjoy a good summer monster flick that doesn’t take itself too seriously. And yet, this one went above and beyond what I expected. The writing kept me smiling, laughing, and saying, “Oh COOL!”Β  …

A true coming of age story, Lady Bird shows things in a more raw and realistic way. The styling and acting lifts it above other similar stories. However it has some of the same pitfalls as any story that has been told so many times. …

At first I was really on the fence about this. I wanted a fun, silly romp with some jokes and fun fight sets. It starts extremely slowly with some tropes built on top of tropes that had my patience running thin. But then, it gave me what I wanted! Some fantastic CGI, fights, and banter! If you can stick it out through the unnecessary setup then you’re in for a joyful time.Β  …
